He is the Ultimate Light!

By Watchman | August 29, 2015

” You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:14-16)

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”  (John 8:12)

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”  (John 9:5)

A few days ago I published a post here about Christians as the “salt of the earth”  as Jesus proclaimed in Matthew 5, but His words (along with my questions about them) were followed immediately by His claim that we are also the “light of the world.”  That actually made sense: after all, are we not called to spread the good news of His salvation to those living in darkness?  However, I couldn’t help but notice that in at least two subsequent verses, Jesus referred to Himself as the “light of the world.”  Was He putting us on the same level as Himself?  That really cannot be.  Jesus was God made flesh; sinless, with no darkness at all within Him; with no taint of the original sin which produced a fallen mankind in need of a Savior.  I puzzled over this for a while, and even prayed that God would show me how we are considered to be the light (other than as carriers of the Gospel), when Jesus Himself is the light.  Well, because He is an awesome God who answers prayer, I had my answer even before I finished my petition to Him.  He spoke into my heart immediately:

“I gave you moonlight at night so you could see your way in the dark, yet you know that the moon casts no light of its own.  It mostly reflects the light of the sun.”

Our light is the light of the moon.  It does not shine because we are such wonderful, worthy people; it shines because it is a reflection of the Son, who is the source of all light!  Ultimately, it is not our light which shines, but the light of the love of God which He has implanted into our hearts.  Just as God has granted us sonship by adoption into His family (yes, ladies, even those of us who are female have received sonship–allowing us equal rights and standing in His sight), He has granted us the light which is to “shine before men.”  Jesus is The Light.  We are as small candles in comparison with the Son, but our responsibilities are clear.

Light’s main purpose is to dispel darkness.  We must reflect the light of His love…not our love, but His working through us…to all of those who are unhappy, sin-sick and heartsick; to those who are burdened and weary. We must shine His love to those who are angry and bitter, to bring hope to the hopeless.

Light also attracts.  If you’re not sure if I’m right in this, go take a look tonight at the light outside your front door.  I’m willing to bet there will be at least one creature fluttering around it, drawn to it’s comfort and warmth.  Is my “light” providing such comfort and warmth that others will be attracted to what is residing in my heart?  I truly cannot be sure, yet dearly want to be loving enough to attract those in pain (both mental and spiritual) to turn to the One on whom I depend for my well-being, my salvation, and even every breath I take.  I will be praying that the Lord helps me to turn up the flame a bit so that those around me who need Him will be pointed toward that ultimate light!

Light exposes truth and lies, good and evil.  In John 3:19-21, Jesus tells us, “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”   Most of us need to work harder to expose evil where we face it, yet it must be done in such a manner that we continue to reflect God’s love.  If we confront those living outside of the will of God with hatred, sarcasm, bad language and vitriol, there will be little chance for the advancement of His kingdom.  Remember, we expose the lie and the sin, but continue to love the sinner.

Light is needed for almost every living to grow…His Light.  May we continue to reflect His light on our neighbors, our families, our relationships and even on our enemies, that they may see our good works and glorify our Heavenly Father!

Maranatha!

Thank you so much, 4Christ! It sometimes galls me that I have so many times passed up chances to share His love, but His mercy (praise His name!) is great!
