Loving in a Time of Hate

By Watchman | July 26, 2012

But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.   But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God , should shine on them….For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ…We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…   —(2 Corinthians 4:3-4, 6, 8-9)

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…(2nd Timothy 3:1-4)

Those of you who have followed The Watchman on the Wall  since its beginnings may remember an earlier post about a word God had given me about the final years of being able to choose who or what we would follow.  Since that early blog entry some years ago, I have watched as the world began to take sides more overtly; I have watched as evil made itself known and demanded that we all embrace it or face a certain amount of negative consequences, i.e., persecutions.  I have watched as God lifted His hand further and further off this nation as we demanded more and more autonomy from Him, and I have seen the warning signs He has posted so that we can never say that He gave us no signals announcing His displeasure.  The unusual weather patterns, the world economic crisis and the loss of certain of our democratic freedoms are all signs that the Lord is about to move in His displeasure.  The Scriptures (and history) are replete with similar examples.  In the last month or so, several things have happened which are showcasing most egregiously the changes that are taking place in the US.  The Presidential campaigns are heating up, another mass shooting took place, and the CEO of a large company announced his support for traditional marriage.  Although if these are looked at from one direction they may seem to be just more examples of the “same old same old”, I believe that they are working together to herald the end of our time as a Christian nation, and to prepare believers for the time to come.

The current administration is dredging up any mud they can to discredit any opposition in the coming election, whether true or false.  Truth does not seem to be a concern, nor are the majority of people in the US demanding it.  The administration in collusion with the mainstream media has created an atmosphere of racial division and hatred that has not been equaled since the height of the KKK’s influence.  This time, however, the enemy is being portrayed as conservatives and fundamentalist Christians.  The theater shooting that took place earlier this week in Aurora, Colorado, was evidently the work of a disturbed and mentally ill young man, yet the media has tried hard to use it to discredit certain conservative groups and commentators, while the administration is using it to try and further limit our Second Amendment right to bear arms.  Even the horrific results of the this tragic shooting, however, seemed to dim beside the furor that erupted when Chick-Fil-A’s CEO said in an interview that by encouraging gay marriage he was afraid we were bringing down God’s wrath upon the nation.  Never mind that they have an open hiring policy, and never try to refuse service to anyone–this interview was enough to send a goodly portion of our politicians and most of Hollywood into an almost insane, frothing-at-the-mouth state of hatred.  Politicians are vowing to shut down the restaurants or keep them out of their districts, actors and actresses are reacting with language that no decent man or woman would use in a public forum and calling for death and disease on those who would stand on the word of God; and directing their vitriol toward anyone who might disagree with them.  The politically-correct and so-called tolerant left is spewing a flood of intolerance, hatred and obscenity.  How is a Christian supposed to deal with such a terrible scenario?

We are supposed to love.

As impossible as it sounds at the start, we all need to use this time to begin to love those who hate us and “pray for those who despitefully use us.”  Look at each of these people today a bit differently if you can, and understand that you are watching the walking dead.  You are seeing people so far sunk in rebellion against the Father that the only chance they now have is to for just a few moments see what is actually in their own hearts.  If they do not get those moments, they will die in their sins and spend an eternity in hell.  God loves them just as much as He loves me or He loves each of us.  He sees even the most offensive and unregenerate of these people as some of His special creations, and He does not want them to be lost.  He wants them to turn to Him in repentance to receive His forgiveness and love.  As those committed to following in Christ’s way, this is what we must pray for.  We need to love them enough to wish for the salvation of their souls. We must love them enough to pray for them to hear the voice of the Almighty and to get a glimpse of the blackness of the sin that has taken root in their hearts.

I cannot say whether or not the hatred is too strong within these people to allow them to even try to hear the truth of our Lord, but I do know that we must try.  Make a list today of public figures–politicians,  literary folks and entertainers–whom you may have heard say something that  is in complete opposition to the word of God, and resolve to pray for each of them at least once per day.  Keep your temper from getting the best of you when you hear Christians, Christianity and Christ Himself insulted.  We belong to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and it is His commandment and His way that must be our guide.

The three above events are, oddly enough, becoming entwined in most people’s minds—I believe by design on the part of the media.  Remember that God loves you and wants you for His own child, and Christ wants you as His own spotless bride.  Love the unlovable, stand fast upon the precious word of God, and remember that it doesn’t matter what someone more famous than you may say; God reigns!

You are right. We are to love the unlovable. I have to start with my mouth and allow the words to work their way into my heart because God knows my heart. I must make the choice to love and to pray. It’s not easy. It can be done and must be done. Thank you, Watchman, for this reminder.

What Shirley said and more. I have only lately come to what you have said about loving our enemies, I “heard” it before but I wasn’t “tuning in”…if you know what I mean.

Recently I said something along these lines of loving them because God does, and praying for their souls.

I’m no longer “foaming at the mouth” when I hear Obama open his for yet more lies and ObaIslamanation to spew forth, uncaring how totally unbelievable he is. Well…I don’t suppose he is to those who walk in darkness.

Another great blog with incredible in sight and UP-sight…you speak a lot of your own beautiful soul and spirit with the words you use.

    Call me?

Thank you Watchman for all that you do and the clear and concise language that even those who might wander by after we share it though the net can understand. With love Susan

It couldn’t have been better explained dear watchman. I was just in a confused state of ma mind when scrolling through the pages of web I landed here.
And what a landing it was !!! am standing in awe to know that how amazingly my God operates to give you guidance. It was really difficult for me to forgive a person who broke my heart so terribly that it almost took me to ruins. But with my family and few faithful God loving friends by my side I could dive deeper into the word that brought me out of this snare.
Thanks a lot watchman, May God Almighty use you even more abundantly in rescuing hearts and souls from such wicked instances what the enemy plants in our hearts. Today I can pray for all those who betrayed me and hated me is just because I have Love (Jesus) on my side. Thank you Lord for this everlasting Love for me!!!
