Give Thanks

By Watchman | November 25, 2013

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.  (1 Thessalonians 5: 18)

Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.   (Henry Smith)

It’s Thanksgiving Day week here in the US, and it is passing by with little attention being paid to it other than good sales on turkeys at the grocery stores.  Many shops have already marked down all their special Thanksgiving stock in preparation for Christmas; far more heed has been paid to Black Friday, supposedly the biggest shopping day of the year.  Jesus told us that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be found also.  Where is your treasure today?  Where is your heart to be found?

So much has happened in this nation lately–none of it good–that it seems most people see little for which to give thanks this year.  Betrayals of the American people and our Constitution by the current administration abound.  People are finally waking up to the knowledge that the economy is no better at all; the “Obamacare” debacle has demoralized a large segment that had until recently refused to believe that our President could be lying about its consequences. We have watched as the administration lied about the death of our ambassador to Benghazi, Libya along with those of  several American patriots that went to his aid, blaming a You-Tube video that no one in the Middle East had even seen for the deaths; and we have learned positively that our government monitors our phone calls and e-mails.  Disagreement with the homosexual agenda has been equated with hate, and no one in either political office or in the media chooses to address the growing violence directed toward whites by mobs of black youths in many of our major cities.  Worst of all, the administration has instigated a new agreement  with Iran that will lift the economic sanctions against that country and put us and especially our ally Israel in grave danger.  It was a blatant betrayal of Israel, the nation on which God set His name and which He commanded us to bless.   So, what is there to be thankful for?  A whole lot!

1.   God is still in control.  God raises up leaders and He takes them down.  God prospers nations, and removes the prosperity when His people sin. He still sends warnings in weather patterns, in disasters, and in the sun, moon and stars to bring nations back to Him.  Thank God!

2.   God still loves us!  God still sends the Holy Spirit to call those who would turn to Christ for salvation, to fill them and bring them to repentance.  He still listens to our prayers and answers them.  He loves us not just as people He has created, but as individuals whom He has called to have fellowship with Him, to whom He will grant healing and restoration and forgiveness. Thank God!

3. God will never allow evil to win in the end.  God has assured us through His prophecies in the scriptures that the wicked will not prosper forever.  No matter what ungodly and evil moves our governments may make, God will not allow them to stand.  He will never leave us nor forsake us, and He has promised to hold those of us who love Him in the palm of His hand; guiding, protecting and leading us.  And, by the way, God will never allow anyone to “wipe Israel off the face of the map.”  Israel is the apple of His eye, and those who come against her will perish.

4.   God gave us Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son: sinless and perfect, to be the Lamb without blemish who would take all of our sins upon Himself so that we might never have to pay the price for our wickedness.  “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour.”  Thank God!

5.   When Jesus overcame death and ascended to the right hand of our Father, He took with Him the need to ever fear death, so long as we have asked Him into our hearts and been born of the Spirit.  Do you realize that?  Are you facing an illness that you fear may lead to death?  You need not fear any longer.  Through Jesus, you win no matter what.  If you are healed, you win!  If you are not, you will one day wake up to spend an eternity in the presence of our Lord!  You win!  God has not made us survivors; He has made us overcomers and victors! Thank God!

While I try to give thanks to God always, this Thanksgiving I will be giving Him special praise and thanks for His goodness and faithfulness to me and to all generations; for my home and family, for His great love, and for all the tender mercies with which He has graced me.  May my treasure always be His love and His presence, and my heart be found with Him!   Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

Maranatha!

What a beautiful, straight-forward reminder that every day should be a day of “thanks-giving”! We are blessed. Thank you for your faithfulness, Watchman, in sounding warnings, in giving words that bring hope; for all you do in obedience to our Heavenly Father. God bless you!
